Positive EV betting and closing line value, explained
By Karel Moreau, editor of sportspicksdiscord ·
A bet is +EV (positive expected value) when your true chance of winning is higher than the odds imply. Over many bets, only +EV bets make money. Because results are so noisy, sharp bettors judge skill by closing line value (CLV) — whether they got a better price than the line closed at — rather than by win-loss record.
Expected value in one line
EV per unit = (win probability × profit if it wins) − (loss probability × stake). A 55% bet at -110: 0.55 × 0.909 − 0.45 × 1 = +0.050 units. The same bet at 52% is −0.007.
| Price | True win % | EV per unit | |
|---|---|---|---|
| -110 | 55% | +0.050 u | +EV |
| +110 | 50% | +0.050 u | +EV |
| +130 | 45% | +0.035 u | +EV |
| -170 | 62% | -0.015 u | −EV |
| -110 | 52% | -0.007 u | −EV |
| +140 | 40% | -0.040 u | −EV |
Why record alone cannot tell you
Take a genuine 55% bettor at -110. Here is the range their observed win rate will fall in about 95% of the time, by sample size:
| Bets | Noise (±2 SD) | Observed range |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | ±14.1% | 41% – 69% |
| 100 | ±10.0% | 45% – 65% |
| 250 | ±6.3% | 49% – 61% |
| 500 | ±4.5% | 51% – 59% |
| 1,000 | ±3.2% | 52% – 58% |
| 2,000 | ±2.2% | 53% – 57% |
At 100 bets, a real 55% bettor can look like 45% or 65%. That is why a capper's hot month tells you almost nothing, and why sharp bettors look at something that converges faster.
Closing line value
The closing line is the last price before the game starts, when the market has absorbed the most information. If you bet a side at -105 and it closes at -120, you beat the close — you got a price the market later decided was too generous. Consistently beating the close is the strongest evidence of edge you can get without waiting for thousands of results.
For a picks service, the question is simple: do their picks beat the closing line, measured from when they were posted to members? A capper whose picks consistently close worse than posted is, at best, lucky.
What "sharp" means
Sharp bettors are the ones who beat the close over time. Books limit them; many never sell picks, because publishing a pick moves the line and destroys the edge. When a picks seller calls themselves sharp, CLV is the claim to ask them to back up.

Frequently asked questions
What is EV betting?
Betting only when your estimated win probability is higher than the probability implied by the odds, so the bet has positive expected value.
What is positive EV in sports betting?
A bet whose expected profit is above zero: true win chance × payout exceeds loss chance × stake. At -110 you need a true win rate above 52.38%.
What is closing line value (CLV)?
The difference between the price you bet and the final price before the game. Beating the close consistently is the best short-run evidence of skill.
What is a sharp bettor?
Someone who consistently beats the closing line. Sportsbooks limit them, and most do not sell picks.
How long does it take to prove a betting edge?
On win-loss alone, well over a thousand bets for a modest edge. CLV gives a useful signal much sooner.
