Bankroll management for sports betting: units, Kelly and streaks
By Karel Moreau, editor of sportspicksdiscord ·
Bankroll management means sizing every bet as a small, fixed share of money you can afford to lose — usually 1% to 2% — so a normal losing streak cannot wipe you out. Even a genuinely good bettor hits long cold runs; staking decides whether they survive them. A picks subscription is part of the bankroll too, and at small stakes it can be the biggest cost you have.
Losing streaks are normal
For a bettor who wins 55% of -110 bets — good by any standard — the chance of hitting at least one losing run of a given length somewhere in 500 bets:
| Losses in a row | Chance over 500 bets |
|---|---|
| 5 | >99% |
| 7 | 64% |
| 9 | 19% |
| 11 | 4% |
At 5% a bet, a nine-bet losing run costs over a third of the bankroll. At 1%, it costs nine percent. That is the entire argument for small flat units.
Flat betting
Every bet the same size — one unit, 1–2% of the starting bankroll, recalculated occasionally. Simple, hard to break, and the right default for almost everyone. What a unit is at every bankroll size.
The Kelly criterion
Kelly sizes each bet to maximise long-run growth given your edge: f = (b·p − q) / b, where b is the decimal profit per unit staked, p your win probability and q = 1 − p. At -110:
| True win rate | Full Kelly | Half Kelly | Quarter Kelly |
|---|---|---|---|
| 53% | 1.3% | 0.7% | 0.33% |
| 54% | 3.4% | 1.7% | 0.85% |
| 55% | 5.5% | 2.8% | 1.38% |
| 56% | 7.6% | 3.8% | 1.90% |
| 58% | 11.8% | 5.9% | 2.95% |
| 60% | 16.0% | 8.0% | 4.00% |
Two catches. Full Kelly is extremely volatile, which is why people who use it bet half or a quarter. And it depends on knowing your true win rate — which, as our EV guide shows, takes a very long record to estimate. Overestimate it and Kelly tells you to overbet.
The subscription is a bet too
The picks communities we track cost a median of $64 per 30 days. On a $1,000 bankroll that is 6% of your money a month before a single pick — more than most people would ever stake on one game. Budget it as a fixed cost and decide in advance how many months it gets to prove itself.
Rules worth writing down
- Bankroll is money you can lose entirely. Never top it up from rent or bills.
- 1–2% flat units until you have hundreds of recorded bets.
- No chasing: the unit does not grow after a loss.
- Track every bet, including the price you actually got.
- Set a monthly stop-loss and a review date for any paid service.
Frequently asked questions
What is bankroll management in sports betting?
Sizing each bet as a small fixed share of money you can afford to lose — typically 1–2% — so normal losing streaks cannot wipe you out.
How much of my bankroll should I bet?
Most disciplined bettors use 1–2% per bet. Anything above 5% risks losing a large share of the bankroll in a routine losing streak.
What is the Kelly criterion?
A formula that sizes bets by edge: f = (b·p − q) / b. Most people use half or quarter Kelly because full Kelly is highly volatile and depends on knowing your true win rate.
How long can a losing streak be for a winning bettor?
For a 55% bettor at -110 over 500 bets, a run of at least seven straight losses happens 64% of the time.
