What is a parlay? How it pays, and why the edge compounds
By Karel Moreau, editor of sportspicksdiscord ·
A parlay combines two or more bets into one; every leg has to win. The payout is the product of each leg's odds, so it grows fast — but so does the sportsbook's edge. A single -110 bet carries a 4.5% house edge. A four-leg parlay of -110 legs carries about 17%. A ten-leg parlay, about 37%.
How a parlay pays
Convert each leg to decimal odds and multiply. Two -110 legs: 1.909 × 1.909 = 3.645, so a $10 parlay returns $36.45 — a profit of $26.45, or +264 in American odds.
Payout vs fair odds, leg by leg
Assuming each -110 leg is a genuine 50/50 coin flip, here is what the book pays against what the risk is actually worth:
| Legs | Book pays | Fair payout | Chance all win | House edge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | +91 | +100 | 50.0% | 4.5% |
| 2 | +264 | +300 | 25.0% | 8.9% |
| 3 | +596 | +700 | 12.5% | 13.0% |
| 4 | +1228 | +1500 | 6.2% | 17.0% |
| 5 | +2436 | +3100 | 3.1% | 20.8% |
| 6 | +4741 | +6300 | 1.6% | 24.4% |
| 8 | +17545 | +25500 | 0.39% | 31.1% |
| 10 | +64208 | +102300 | 0.10% | 37.2% |
The edge compounds because each leg's margin multiplies into the next. That is why sportsbooks promote parlays so heavily: they are the highest-margin product on the board.
Are parlays worth it?
As a way to make money over time, generally no — the edge against you rises with every leg, so a bettor who is break-even on singles loses more on parlays. As entertainment with a small, fixed stake, that is a personal decision. The one case the maths favours is correlated legs a book has priced independently, and books actively restrict those.
Why picks communities sell parlays
13 of the 53 picks communities we track mention parlays in their listing — Bookie Bandit, Parlay Minds, ChilliManPicks, Trust My System among them. Parlays make for screenshot-friendly wins: a +600 hit looks spectacular in a Discord channel even if the long-run record is negative. When a service leads with parlay screenshots, ask for the full parlay record in units, including every losing slip.

Frequently asked questions
What is a parlay?
A single bet that combines two or more selections. Every leg has to win; the payout is the product of each leg's decimal odds.
How much does a 2-leg parlay pay?
Two -110 legs pay about +264 — $26.45 profit on $10. At fair 50/50 odds it would pay +300.
Are parlays worth it?
Not as a long-run strategy: the house edge compounds from about 4.5% on a single -110 bet to about 17% on four legs and 37% on ten.
Why do sportsbooks push parlays?
Because the compounded margin makes them the highest-edge product they sell.
